Lots of kids these days not only don't seem to feel cold, they usually don't bother to wear anything waterproof when it's raining - they just gradually get wet. I hope their phones are water-resistant!

Yes, Combe Martin had a lot going for it - although, as you say, it was a good idea to wear sandals when wading in and around the rock pools. Mine were Clarks sandals with leather uppers, metal buckles and synthetic soles (I think). They survived being worn in seawater very well, although the leather was visibly salt-stained and the buckles became rusty - badges of honour, I reckon!
I was there in 1971 and 1972, each for 2 weeks. I visited again more recently and found the beach had become a bit muddy. Not that this is a problem...
